Appalachian Folk Percussion

Steven is proud to carry on the tradition of Appalachian Folk percussion (percussion instruments and styles of playing that are found in traditional music styles of the Appalachian mountains).  These instruments include the washboard, spoons, bones, 'hambone' (body percussion), and flat-footing (a style of percussive dance).  Also included here is the snare drum played with brushes as it draws from the same vocabulary as the instruments above, and is commonly played in modern Appalachian music styles of Bluegrass and Old Time.  Many of these instruments find their roots in other lineages (such as the spoons and bones from the Irish Heritage, and flatfooting and hambone from the African Heritage) but have found their own style or 'voice' in Appalachian music.  Steven has studied and performed on these instruments for many years, and he offers an educational program that blends performance and history into an entertaining and informative presentation. Please see the videos below for samples of some traditional and modern approaches to these instruments.
